March 22

1. I got a couple of requests for changes in the schedule, so here's what I have at this point. Please let me know if there are any additional problems with it: Thursday, April 6 2 PM USC (undergrad), Utah Valley 3:30 PM USC (grad), Condordia Irvine, LMU-1 5 PM Arizona, LMU-2 Friday, April 7 9 AM St. Thomas, Cal Poly, San Diego 10:30 AM Willamette, William & Mary, St Louis (grad) 12:30 PM UW, Loyola/Chicao, St Louis (undergrad) 2 PM NYU, , Texas A&M, Concordia Montreal 3:30 PM Tuskegee, Army, Navy 5 PM Valparaiso, Villanova, Montgomery

2. I had a conversation with our NCAA compliance officer the other day which reminded me of how strict the rules are regarding student athletes receiving anything connected with an athletic event that they're participating in on their own. If you have any student athletes on your biathlon teams, I'd strongly suggest that you talk to someone in your athletics department to make sure that your students understand what they can and cannot accept.

3. If you're receiving any sort of travel assistance, our Controller's Office this year has said that funds will be distributed only as reimbursements. So please send receipts for the amount requested, and a check will be sent ASAP. Thanks for your cooperation on this.

4. We've finalized the prize money. See www.ethicsandbusiness.org/prizemoney.htm for details. You'll notice a mention of two $250 prizes for a "Saturday Afternoon Ethics Competition." This will be an optional competition that Paul Melendez of the University of Arizona will conduct and is open to members of any team not advancing to Saturday night's Final Four. We're still working out the details, but this will be based on an exercise students do at the time. It requires no preparation and does not involve the case they've worked on for their presentation.

5. FYI. A few days after the competition, we'll be conducting the equivalent of what they call in the Olympics a "demonstration event" involving a team of students from the Middle Eastern Technical University in Ankara, Turkey. The team will give a presentation via a webcast to a panel of judges here at LMU. We'll evaluate how things go and consider the technology for the future.

6. Please remember that by March 31, we'd like to receive: the team's registration form (http://www.ethicsandbusiness.org/entry.htm); entry forms for the run (http://www.ethicsandbusiness.org/run/entryform_2006-Biathlon.pdf); a one (or more) page handout that includes the names of the team members, their "business identity," their topic, their audience's "business identity," an executive summary of their argument, and an outline of their presentation; and at least a preliminary Powerpoint file that we can load into the computer the team will be using.

7. I'd also appreciate getting topics and whether the team will be in the biathlon (and the distance) ASAP. That's it for now.

Thanks, Tom White
