Topic/Audience: “Passenger Safety vs. Pilot Safety"

Executive Summary

As representatives of Aero Consulting Group, we will present a solution to the problem of alcohol-induced pilots operating passenger planes. The drinking patterns of employees of the airline industry and the degree to which they comply with existing policies have an impact not only on these individuals themselves but also on the lives of many others for whose safety they are responsible. Presently, pilots feel that randomized alcohol testing is an unnecessary invasion of their privacy and a wrongful assumption of guilt. Current measures, while protecting the privacy of pilots, do not effectively ensure passenger safety. As a service provider, the airlines have ethical and legal responsibilities to provide safe transportation of passengers. For this reason, we are recommending an increase in preventative measures to guarantee passenger safety. We recommend that airlines implement a more extensive alcohol-testing policy. Currently, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) mandates random alcohol testing at a rate of about 10% per year; however, we believe this rate should increase significantly. This policy will help to prevent disasters that could be extremely costly to airline companies. The costs required to implement our program are far less than the financial devastation of just one alcohol-related crash.
