Summary
Ben and Jerry’s
Homemade Inc., popular manufacturer and distributor of ice cream
and other frozen desserts, is committed to the practice of socially
responsible business. They engage in several programs that attempt
to address socially relevant concerns; one such program is Ben
and Jerry’s Ice Cream For a Change™. The For a Change™
program is designed to address the issues of fairness and human
dignity that arise in the context of global trade. Recently, there
has begun a trend of movements that aim to create markets in which
importers will pay prices regulated by principles of fair trade,
rather than free trade. Ben and Jerry’s For a Change™
Program works with small farms to supply the raw materials for
their 3 for a change flavors: Chocolate For a Change™, Vanilla
For a Change™, and Coffee For a Change™. We have chosen
to highlight Ben and Jerry’s ethically and socially responsible
position; within the context of the presentation, we will act
as representatives of Ben and Jerry’s, while the judges
will be representatives of the comparably-sized ice cream company,
Dreamery Ice Cream. Dreamery is interested in implementing a program
similar to For a Change™, and has invited the representatives
from Ben and Jerry’s to explain the legal, financial, and
ethical dimensions.
